Celebrity Couple Uses Mediation to Settle Divorce Issues

Sat 10th November, 2018 Family Law

Celebrity couple Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner have settled their divorce issues using a mediator. The couple split in 2015 after 10 years of marriage but did not file for divorce until April 2017. Last month, the couple filed a petition requesting a fast-tracked divorce process, utilizing a mediator to resolve their outstanding issues. The couple agreed to share joint physical and legal custody of their children, ages 12, 9, and 6, in addition to attending monthly co-parenting therapist sessions. Affleck and Garner also pledged to refrain from badmouthing one another in front of their children or fighting, yelling, or using profanity in their presence. The paperwork was filed after using a mediator for the couple during the recent negotiations to help them reach an agreement with as little conflict as possible.

Divorce Mediation

Divorce proceedings are often seen as stressful and contentious affairs, but more couples are turning to divorce mediation to settle their differences. Mediation uses a neutral third party to help resolve conflicts and outstanding issues in a divorce. A mediator can help couples come to an agreement on the division of assets, spousal support, child custody, child support, and more. Divorce mediation is typically less expensive and takes less time than traditional divorce proceedings. The approach is amicable, not adversarial, which can be particularly helpful when children are involved, and the spouses will have to continue co-parenting while they grow up.

A divorce mediator serves as the go-between for spouses and also handles all legal aspects of the case, as well. The mediator will fill out the requisite forms for the court and collect all relevant documentation from each spouse. The mediator will also submit all forms to the court and answer any questions the judge may have before signing off on the final settlement.
